Knights of Heroes A summer camp for kids who've lost a parent in war Dan's Training Runs

dan spurginHello, my name is Dan Spurgin, and as part of my attempt to run my first marathon (the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. on Oct 25th, 2009) I've volunteered to raise $500 for a small non-profit organization called Knights of Heroes.

Knights of Heroes is an official charity organization of the Marine Corps Marathon. Simply put, Knights of Heroes is a group of caring folks, most military or ex-military, who want to make sure children of fallen soldiers are taken care of. Specifically, they've started a week long summer camp in Colorado to give these children the chance to have fun and develop some needed adult mentor relationships.

...is a program designed to offer the sons of fallen military members an opportunity to spend one week in a safe and caring environment where they can explore the outdoors and act like boys."

Mission

The purpose of the program is to provide sons of fallen military members with an opportunity to develop lasting mentor-mentee relationships with adult male role models in a safe environment. The boys also develop lasting friendships with similarly situated boys from across the country while participating in exciting outdoor activities in Colorado. The camp also provides counseling sessions to help the boys with the loss of their father. The entire program is at no cost to the families.

Programs

The major program is a one-week summer camp conducted in Colorado at the "One Good Turn" ranch. Enrollment is limited to 25 campers. While the boys are at camp, moms and daughters are invited to Colorado to take part in activities in and around Colorado Springs.

Additional Comments from the Organization

This program was developed to support the families of those that have given their lives in the defense of our Nation. The sons of our heroes will need guidance and support during there development. We are here to see they receive that help.
